There is a dialogue in a famous Telugu movie(యమ గోల) where actor "రావు గోపాల్ రావు" says "బ్రహ్మ దేవుడు ప్రతీ వోడ్ని ఒకందుకు పుట్టిస్తాడు, నేను ఇందుకు పుట్టానన్న మాట"
(God creates everyone for a specific reason, I exist for this)
Though the dialogue was intended for laughter, it does have a very true meaning.
Barring the argument whether god really created like that or not, if we were to look from a different angle, Majority of the humans, just like a running race, start the same but finish different.
Simply because, the circumstances, the abilities and opportunities either accelerate/decelerate the individual's outcome.
In a multi-faceted society it is totally unfair to compare the success of one with other. My belief of success is purely achievement.
Achievement is a characteristic quality of what you did. I would like to quote a few examples of achievement
When a cricketer wins a game with a sixer of the last ball --- An Achievement
When an athlete wins a gold medal at the Olympics --- An Achievement
When a scholar wins a Nobel Prize for his contribution --- An Achievement
When a military soldier rescues a hostage safe --- An Achievement
When a lawyer bails out an innocent from the jaws of death --- An Achievement
Many more in each context.
True to say those achievements, according to me, share EQUAL value.
Unfortunately, Achievement(an abstract term) when rewarded differently, is changing the total definition of one being SUCCESSFUL.
With money playing a key role followed by recognition and respect, comparisons tend to arise among the cricketer, athlete, scholar, soldier and lawyer making some superior and others inferior.
This degree of disparity even made the parents to choose a "successful" path for their children.
"I want my kid to be an Engineer or a Doctor". Why is an Engineer or doctor more successful? Is it becoz of the achievement? Not really, it is for sure the monetary returns first and then glory, if any.
(My personal view is, in the next decade these Engineers will be mere mortals, good for nothing as the rest. So aim for making them Doctors, for sure more returns).
Alas, if the whole world was only engineers and doctors,
I find it hard to imagine how we would have existed!!
My gratefulness extends to all the less intelligent and unsuccessful brains who are helping the society run with their contribution at every level.
Ever since GREED overcame the NEED, for obvious reasons, if everyone were to choose the same path, even then comparing to a specific individual's success is yet again unfair.
As an illustration, In an Olympic event such as boxing, there are 17 classes or categories.
Competitive comparison is done only between individuals of same category.
Someone who won gold in Lightweight, will most obviously get whacked even by the last contender from heavyweight.
In that instance the lightweight guy was unsuccessful compared to heavyweight guy, yet the lightweight guy achieved more than the heavyweight guy.
Unfortunately these rules do not apply when comparing a kid's achievement with other kids. By making unfair comparisons instead of making them SUCCESSFUL, few end up making them SUCKcessFOOLs
Those who maximize the situations, abilities and opportunities outshine others who fall in the same pool.
The end result is directly proportional to ability and opportunity.
Ability, comes through interest, combined with opportunity and focus will give success.
The next time you guide or encourage someone, try to think how you want to do and what he/she wants to do
He/She rather achieve and be SUCCESSFUL as compared to SUCKcessFOOL
